A food-loving Stratford-upon-Avon gran is taking on A-list chefs by livestreaming her own cooking lessons. From the comfort of her care home, Jean Roberts has been sharing her cooking tips via Facebook.
The 85-year-old, who lives in Alveston Leys Bupa Care Home in Stratford-upon-Avon, has a passion for cooking – and now it is being shared with the world. She was encouraged by carers to livestream cooking tutorials after they clocked her skills.
Reported in the Mirror, the OAP said: “I have always loved cooking. It brings me a lot of joy to turn fresh ingredients into a delicious meal or dessert.”

She added: “I like to think I passed on my cooking knowledge to my son, Andrew, as he is also a brilliant cook. So perhaps it runs in the family!”
She has made tutorials on everything from cinnamon and iced pecan rolls to pancakes, homemade burgers and pizzas
Joanna Palmer, Jean’s daughter, commented on her first cooking tutorial, saying: “Move over Jamie, it’s ‘Jean Oliver’! It’s lovely to see you cooking. You always loved being in the kitchen.”

Having showcased her skills, the pensioner is now keen to share her love for Asian cuisine and she hopes to share some Singaporean dishes in her next video.
She has inspired others in the care home according to Phil Vickers, senior activity coordinator at Alveston Leys Bupa Care Home, who said: “Jean has a real passion for cooking that shines through in any food-related activity we host.
“We always try to tailor our activities around every resident’s individuality, so we’re thrilled that Jean was keen to get stuck in and it has inspired her fellow residents to get involved in cooking.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what else Jean has to teach us and tasting more of her delicious food.”
As well as sharing tutorials, Jean also has five top tips for cooking, they are:
- Where possible, always try to use fresh locally sourced produce
- Always remember to measure and weigh
- Cooking is a science, always plan beforehand and have your prepared ingredients ready. Mistakes happen!
- Stay relaxed and follow the recipe
- Involve family and friends and share the love.
